Stephen Burrows: Vibrant and Cheerful Fashions at MCNY

'When Fashion Danced' is currently on view at the Museum of the City of New York, which presents the first major retrospective of fashion designer Stephen Burrows' work. Dubbed 'the brightest star of American fashion' by The New York Times, his designs soared to great heights during the disco heyday in late 70s early 80s.  Winner of three consecutive Coty Fashion Awards ( and being the first African American to do so), Burrows' work became internationally recognized and worn by the era's glitterati including Liza Minnelli, Pat Cleveland, Iman, Grace Jones, and Cher.  Burrows' star also shone when he represented the American designers and won victoriously against the French designers at the infamous fashion battle in Versailles.  Aside from the dazzling costumes, the exhibit also includes video, music, photographs and press clippings of the time.
