Lina Viktor + Mickalene Thomas: Two Must See Summer Solo Shows by WOC
Lina Viktor, an English born and New York-based artist, introduces her first solo exhibition entitled 'Arcadia' at Gallery 151 in Chelsea, New York. Viktor, who has exhibited previously at Rox Gallery, Wallplay and at Art Basel Miami Beach, has struck a chord with the worlds of art and fashion. Viktor plays with her signature elements of geometry, gilt, and juxtaposing antiquity against modernity. The works contain her consistent use of black, white, and gold - with the exception of a few paintings that also contain a bold shade of royal blue. Upon entering the gallery you are transported on a delightful optical journey into Viktor's personal shangri-la. A world where opulence, symmetry, and color harmony interact with one another in a visually-decadent dialogue. 'Arcadia' is on view at Gallery 151 through July 10th. Deeper in Chelsea, at blue-chip gallery Lehmann Maupin, artist extraordinaire Mickalene Thomas unveils her fourth solo show 'Tete de Femme'. Thomas who regularly celebrates women in her work, particularly empowered black women, continues this tradition by abstracting the female form and creating highly stunning mixed-media collage pieces. The uber-glamorous works dazzle with their vibrant colors, rhinestone sparkle, and Cubist tendencies. Thomas confidently executes a new direction in her approach to portraiture - intensely geometric and with a side of splendor. 'Tete de Femme' is on view at Lehmann Maupin through August 8th.
