It was truly lit at El Museo del Barrio's Dia de las Divas, the museum's annual Dia de los Muertos gala, which this year celebrated Latinx and Latin-American sheroes in the art world. Held on October 26th, the night was kicked off with sonic stimulations by Sabine Blaizin and DJ Bembona who played an eclectic mix ranging from Fania classics to La India. The main exhibit on display, the work of Afro-Cuban printmaking goddess Belkis Ayón, was available to view into the late hours of the gala event. An artist intervention by the Fourtoul Brothers provided guests with iconic pins and a powerful installation. As well as an altar by Isabella Cruz-Chong, speaking on border crossings, and honoring lost lives. Guests were able to bid in a silent auction featuring luxe goodies by Milly, Urban Decay, Aveda, and vacation trips generously donated by the Mexican Tourism Board. Art was also donated by Tamara Santibañez, among others. A portion of the auction proceeds benefitted hurricane relief efforts in Mexico and Puerto Rico. Guests nibbled on bites from the Side Park Cafe and sipped festive cocktails provided by El Jimador Tequila and beer by Brooklyn Brewery. The night was capped off by legendary performances by experimental pop/funk/soul/electro/Latin alt band Buscabulla (from Puerto Rico, now Brooklyn-based) and New York City's very own Princess Nokia. All of the divas came out to play and strut that night.
