The Thrilling, Tantalizing, and Twinkling Tempest of twigs
Beautiful lean muscles. Feline body. A thunderstorm of confetti raining down from the sky. Acid-dripped, smooth, sensuous beats. I wasn’t ready for the fire, twigs delivered on May 12, 2019 at Park Avenue Armory (on my bday too, no less). twigs blessed New York City with two epic nights in concert ( May 11 + 12) for her show Magdalene at the famed Upper East Side venue during the annual Red Bull Music Festival. twigs’ Magdalene during the RBMF marked the English artist’s latest return to New York City since her last performance, Congregata, which spanned three nights in 2015. The genre-blurring performer, singer, and director showcased a myriad of vibes: an Afro-Futurist tap dance routine, a Kabuki theatre experience, an electrifying rendition of Fukk Sleep with A$AP Rocky for their collab track, a cyborg pirate-inspired look during a sick sword display incorporating Wushu, and mesmerizing the audience with her masterful pole choreo. The highly sensory experience was directed by twigs and acclaimed performance artist Theo Adams. Thank you twigs for transporting me during those few hours into an alternate dimension of Black, fantastical, femininity.
