Girly Culture, Myspace Nostalgia, and Digital Hyper-Femininity at Selenas Mountain
Cutesy. Dark. Obsessive. Digital. 2000s. Hyper-Femme. Fever Lure, a three-person show of all New York-based female artists on view at Selenas Mountain in Ridgewood, Queens, encompasses all of these things.
The entire exhibition reminds me of a sophisticated Myspace page. The kind of page I wish I could’ve created in middle/high school, but didn’t have the language and experience to fully articulate and express. Being attracted to sparkly objects and anime like Sailor Moon, yet at the same time discovering my sexuality and sneaking off to smoke cigarettes.
Christina Yuna Ko‘s practice is influenced by her Korean-American background she grew up with and her love of ‘cute’ culture, with an adult twist. Her pastel color palette comes from the colors she has repeatedly encountered with household objects, such as a dishrack or clothespins, found in any Asian market. By using this palette, combining and juxtaposing household objects with imagery of teen angst and boredom found in ‘90s anime, she showcases the balancing act that any millennial can relate to.
Looking at the works by Shana Sadeghi-Ray, I immediately related to my own collecting/obsessing habits. How instead of letting my compulsive and intense feed into my anxiety or depression, I instead channel it into becoming totally engrossed with one thing, being an ultimate ‘fan’. At the Fever Lure opening, Shana revealed, it was after going through a dark period in her life that she turned her focus outward, and landed on her longtime love of NBA. Through her obsessive collecting and creating of objects around this fandom, she is able to recreate the warm positive experience (and satisfaction) a collector/fan has, being surrounded by their obsession.
Emma Stern’s art practice exemplifies artwork that could only be created in the time we currently live in. By translating the virtual 3D model she creates onto canvas she interconnects the virtual and ‘real’ world we constantly live and interact with. The female models she creates are what I wish could have had on my Myspace page or interact with in some way, rather than the dollz created by Jim Bumgardner , that were used to showcase one’s personality or interact with on The Palace.
