Legendary writer, journalist, cartoonist and art critic Anthony Haden-Guest curates the explosive exhibit 'The Last Party' at WhiteBox Gallery.  Based on Haden-Guest's book of the same title, 'The Last Party',  is an enthralling survey of New York's nocturnal culture starting in the mid-1970s and proceeding through the early 1990s. Since this has been a well-covered era in New York's cultural history, we of course see all of the usual suspects that dominated this period. Photographs of Grace Jones, Madonna, Blondie, Steve Rubell, Halston, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Patti Smith hang on the walls while videos of old-school breakdancers buzz in the background. Elements of the notoriously seedy Mars Bars were recreated in a nostalgia-producing installation. Nightlife icons such as John Sex,  Diane Brill and a pre-famous Rupaul make cameo appearances in the show, recalling a more sexually-adventurous time before the onslaught of AIDS significantly devastated much of this community. Featured artists in this exhibit include Mick Rock, Tina Paul, William Coupon and a host of others who contributed to 'The Last Party'. The show will run though August 23rd at Whitebox Gallery on the Lower East Side.
