Mel Bochner's 'Strong Language': Fit For a 21st Tech-Centric Society

I was literally moved beyond words by Mel Bochner's new show 'Strong Language' (please pardon the pun) currently on view at The Jewish Museum in New York. Bochner delights the eye with his signature hyper-textual paintings deeply entrenched in today's digital speak. With no shortage of hashtags and emoticons, Bochner delves into biting social commentary and ties in neighboring themes of mass consumerism and material culture. The exhibit includes about 70 works which encompass painting, printmaking, drawings,  and wall installations. The paintings in particular, seem to explode off the walls with their shockingly vibrant colors and textural finishes. Bochner used Roget's thesaurus as a resource tool, referring to it as a 'warehouse of words', it supplied his arsenal of 'oh-so-clever' phrases that were splashed onto his paintings. Bochner successfully bridged 'high' and 'low' culture, elitism paired with plebeianism, while infusing huge doses of humor in between. Mel Bochner's 'Strong Language' is on view through September 21st at The Jewish Museum, New York.
