On a recent downtown art opening stroll, I was pleasantly surprised to end up in Soho, and even more delighted to view Frank Stella's new show at Peter Freeman on Grand Street. Stella's new body of work consisted of fourteen sculptures from two series, 'Scarlatti K' and 'Circus', this being his second solo exhibit with the gallery.  With the 'Scarlatti K' works, Stella pays tribute to the noted musicologist Ralph Kirkpatrick, who famously chronicled Italian composer's Domenico Scarlatti's keyboad sonatas. These brightly colored works tangled with metal rods form complex and engaging compositions. In the newer 'Circus' series, Stella re-explores his fascination with circus imagery, showcasing darker and abrasive results. Frank Stella: Recent Work runs until February 22.
