In the past two days,  I've seen an array of both diverse and intriguing shows currently on display in NYC. Here is a rundown of the definitive must see exhibitions.

The  Whitney's 'Blues For Smoke' exhibit which weaves in elements of blues, jazz, rhythm/blues, funk and soul music set within the larger context of the Black Experience in America. Paintings, photography, video and sound installations tell the story of the passion, pain, beauty, sexuality and redemption in the African American struggle.

Eternal art star Jean-Michel Basquiat is alive and well at the current Gagosian exhibit in Chelsea. Over 50 canvases depict his relentless energy, explosive content, and socio-cultural dialogues. A must see for anyone period, his work still speaks volumes in today's age.

Modern masters Donald Judd and Dan Flavin pack a double punch at David Zwirner's new 20th Street space. The works were well positioned on three levels of this multi-level space , offering a sense of serenity and calmness for the observer to really ingest the work.

The Susan Inglett Gallery presents Hope Gangloff's fifth solo show displaying emotional portraits of various subjects in their daily iives. These intensely realistic subjects are vivid, vulnerable and completely human. Gangloff masterfully captures vital details with each canvas through  their personal style and expressions. Rich color and lush texture add to the allure of these paintings.

Veteran LA  painter Don Bachardy presents sketches from a free spirited era entitled 'Portraits from a Canyon: Los Angeles in the 60s an 70s' at Cheim and Read. Curated by Jack Pierson, the series includes some famous friends of Bachardy and his late partner Christopher Isherwood's social circle such as novelist Joan Didion and actor Paul Newman. Simply sketched yet possessing a haunting resemblance to their sitters, the series evokes the carefree and indulgent feeling of that bygone era.

West coast based artist Michele Pred presents a defiant, cynical and non conformst view on female reproductive rights with her inaugural show 'Amendment' at the Nanch Hoffman Gallery. Vintage purses and pumps are re-purposed with birth control pills creating bold statements. With it's tongue in cheek humor, this show continues to push the dialogue on women's bodies and their personal decisions.
