Deep Space at Joseph Nahmad Contemporary in the MPD
On November 9th Gallery Gurls attended the opening of 'Deep Space' at Joseph Nahmad Contemporary. The group show featured the works of Matta, Futura, Phase 2, and Rammellzee all presented in a massive, raw, cavernous space. The colors and abstract themes being explored were cosmic, vibrant and otherworldly. Matta's panoramic surrealist paintings were modeled alongside modern 'grafitti' artists the likes of Futura and Phase 2. The question being asked is what is the universal thread binding these artists together despite the generational gap? Can Matta as a postwar, abstract surrealist be compared to 80s New York grafitti artists? Ultimately Matta's and these newer artists' work arose from the political and social strife present in their lifetimes.
